Choose by charger role
Fenix ARE-X1 V2.0 is the compact single-slot option. Nitecore UMS4 is a four-slot general charger. XTAR VC4SL adds grade and storage modes plus explicit protected-21700 support. SkyRC MC3000 is the configurable charger and analyzer for readers who need deeper control.
These are practical role distinctions, not a universal ranking. Start with the number and type of cells you actually need to charge.
Choose the bay count first
Fenix ARE-X1 V2.0 handles one cell at a time. SkyRC MC3000, Nitecore UMS4 and XTAR VC4SL provide four slots for larger sets or several independent cells.
Bay count leaves the controls and supported lengths unanswered. Use it to narrow the physical workflow, then read the exact support record.
Check the input and power supply
SkyRC MC3000 uses 11–18V DC input. Fenix ARE-X1 V2.0 uses USB Type-C at 5V with a maximum 1.5A input. Nitecore UMS4 documents USB-C input with QC 2.0 available. XTAR VC4SL documents QC3.0 input at 5V/3A or 9V/2A.
Input requirement and package contents are separate questions. Use the charger manual for the required input and the exact package record for any included adapter.
Read support and exceptions together
A charger can list 18650 or 21700 support with limits for protected length, voltage selection, chemistry or named cells. The useful answer is the supported list plus its exceptions.
SkyRC says MC3000 cannot charge protected 21700 cells. Fenix excludes ARB-L16 series and ARB-L21-6000 from ARE-X1 V2.0. XTAR VC4SL expressly supports protected 21700 cells.
Controls can change the charging task
SkyRC MC3000 provides programmable operation profiles and charge, discharge, cycle, refresh, storage and break-in modes. Fenix ARE-X1 V2.0 uses automatic single-channel charging with an LED status indicator. Nitecore UMS4 requires manual voltage selection for LiFePO4 and 3.8V Li-ion. XTAR VC4SL provides charge, grade and store modes.
For a specific cell, read the charger manual beside the cell record. A family code or physical fit alone cannot establish every chemistry, voltage or control setting.
